Buffalo Hot Frogs

Original Post Date: August 1, 2007

So last night, we were at Steph and Brian's playing Piratey games. We were in the middle of a rousing (okay, not so rousing) game of Pirate's Dice when Shauna went outside to answer a phone call. She poked her head back in a few minutes later and said there was frog outside. Coooooooool! We all jumped up and ran outside. Sure enough, hopping his way across the driveway was a little frog! Neal caught it and we all admiring it when Neal goes "Aaaah! It peed on me!" He dropped it. No, it didn't die. Calm down. We caught it again and took him inside. Oh, and we named him Peety. Because he peed on Neal.

So, we get a box for him and put some water in it and then we're trying to figure out what frogs eat. There was no way we could let the frog go just yet, because Tyler would want to see it. And Tyler was sleeping. (It was about 9:45 pm). So, Neal and Brian go outside to stalk crickets to feed Peety. We got it on video. It's pretty funny. Anyway, they catch one tiny cricket and we take it inside to Peety. All of the sudden (and we have this on video, too), Neal goes "Is frog fighting illegal?" and drops another frog in the box. This one is a really little one. And he peed, too, but Neal was prepared and didn't get it on him. So I named this frog Wizzer. At this point, both frogs are trying to get out of the box. Frogs are acrobats, did you know that? More video of that. (Speaking of which...Steph, I want a copy of the video!!!!) The boys go back out to stalk crickets and come back with yet another frog! This one is the biggest of the three, and I name him Fessik. He's pretty agressive, too and was trying to beat his way out of the box. Poor guy.

At this point, the discussion turns to eating the frogs. There was still oil in the deep fryer, and Steph mentioned the possibility of Buffalo Hot Frogs. Sounds tasty? yeah, not so much. We were trying to decide what to do with the frogs. We had to save them so that Tyler could see them. But we didn't want to keep them in the house. The garage was a possiblity. Finally we opted for Tyler's pool on the back deck. The water in it was from rain water, so Tyler wasn't going to swim in it right way. We got a great video of the frogs sliding down the slide into the water, and then swimming around the pool. We let some of the water out and put some islands and grass and stuff in there. The plan was to leave them there overnight, let them get some Tyler-lovin' and then set them free. I haven't heard yet how they survived the night. I'm sure they had a lovely night lounging in the pool and will hop off later today to tell their little froggy friends about their close encounter with really weird humans who totally don't act their ages.
